Spain drinking age

Previously the purchase age. The drinking age is much more permissive than the actual laws. The country is famous for its bars, taverns and terrazas and enjoys countless festivals which makes underage drinking very common but still frowned upon.


This includes buying alcohol in bars and clubs, restaurants and shops. It is forbidden to give alcoholic drinks to people who are younger than years, regardless if for free, nor with the consent of the parents. Italy has set a minimum legal drinking age at years, one of the lowest MLDA in the world.

There are strict controls on drinking and sexual activity in public places. Underage cannot buy or drink alcohol, but usually bartenders and sales people are not very concerned about this restriction. So, make sure your kids are before they purchase beer or wine even, if accompanied by their parents or other adults.

Asturias with a drinking age of raised it to 18. But it is still illegal to sell alcohol to a person under and the owner can have problems with justice.

Most bars only serve one beer on tap, typically San Miguel or Cruzcampo.
