Irish Bovine Animal Identification System - Overview The aim of the Bovine Animal Identification System is to guarantee the safety of beef and beef products by the operation of an effective animal identification and tracing system.

The system has four elements: tagging , bovine passport, on-farm bovine herd registers and a computerised database. In Canada, the Health of Animals Regulations require approved ear tags on all bison, cattle and sheep that leave the farm of origin, except that a bovine may be move without a tag , from the farm of origin to a tagging site. The system for the identification and registration of individual bovine animals includes the following elements: double eartags for each animal with an individual number. You will receive 1ear tags and an applicator so that you can start managing your livestock with ease. The applicator is made from a tungsten alloy, safe for your cows and won’t trigger any allergic reactions.

Also, the tags are sturdily made so you will not have to replace them too soon. Insert the tag with the male part, the pin, pushed through from the back of the ear. Insert tags about one third of the distance away from the head.

Tag your sheep during cool dry weather and give them room after tagging. Make sure the tags and applicator are clean and use disinfectant. Breeding Sheep Sheep which are being kept beyond months must be identified with Electronic Tag and one Visual Tag – both tags must have your unique flock mark (with a zero in front) followed by a five digit animal number. The Electronic tag must be Yellow and the visual tag can be any colour except Yellow, Red or black.

The system , which was launched during the annual Minard Livestock and Beef Festival, at Minard Estate, Brown’s Town, St.

Ann, will primarily target tagging of the industry’s approximately 60heads of dairy and beef cattle , and the issuing of ‘passports’ to the owners, to document the animals’ bio and genetic data. The tagging system requires the application by the keeper of two identically numbered yellow plastic eartags to all calves born on a holding within twenty days of birth. Keepers are obliged to order their annual requirement of eartags directly from the tag supplier approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
