Robust training for residents is provided in all areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery and includes rotations within different departments in the School of Medicine. We accept residents each year for a total of residents. We have a rigorous program. It offers primary care and tertiary care opportunities. They have received advanced training and possess expert knowledge of the bone, skin and muscle of the face, mouth and jaw. Oral surgeons are specifically equipped to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions including cleft lip and palate, facial injuries, neck and oral cancers, dental implants, cosmetic surgery and more. Three residents are taken per year through the national matching service, for a total of twelve residents. The clinical and didactic program is designed to meet the accreditation standards set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
There are approximately 1000. This program, through full-time and part-time OMS faculty, trains surgeons in the contemporary scope of oral - maxillofacial surgery to include implants, office anesthesia, dentoalveolar surgery , head and neck pathology, hard and soft tissue facial reconstruction, TMJ surgery , CMF trauma, and corrective jaw surgery. Implicit in this mission is a commitment to educate residents and provide an outstanding clinical experience.
This program will offer advanced training in orofacial pain, headache disorders and dental sleep medicine. The residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery , is a 5-year program which offers thorough academic knowledge and adcanced surgical skills. To obtain the most comprehensive and diverse patient experiences, residents also rotate to the OMFS clinic in the VCU School of Dentistry.
In addition to the required rotations in general surgery , medicine, and anesthesia, residents serve on pediatric surgery , surgical intensive care service, emergency medicine, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery. These developments opened the doors for the oral surgery program to practice and perform true oral and maxillofacial surgery as we know it today.
The oral surgery residency program advances that took place under Dr. During the program, the resident practices various surgical procedures, including minor and major surgeries within the oral cavity and head and neck region, as well as prvoding care for the hospitalized patients. The specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery is unique in requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry, followed by a comprehensive general and specialist surgical training, and is a recognised international specialty, which within Europe is defined under the medical directives.
