Apply to become justice of the peace

A justice of the peace does not need to be legally qualified. They just need to be committed and able to make goo sound judgements. Visit the Scottish Government website to apply to become a justice of the peace.


Directgov recommends that applicants make three visits to court before submitting their applications. More commonly known as magistrates, justices of the peace in England work purely on a volunteer basis.

Applying for the Position 1. Fill out an application at your local state department office or website. Provide a list of professional or character references if asked. You do not need formal qualifications or legal training to become a magistrate. You need to apply to the advisory committee for your local court. You must be properly trained and qualified to provide professional services in all situations. Check the list of advisory committees to find out if there are any vacancies in your area, and where you need to apply.


Unfortunately, not all of them are qualified to become peace officers. The challenge of recruitment is very real for public safety and criminal justice agencies. It’s been jokingly said that the existing recruitment strategy is to either steal employees from another agency or hope for a recession so more will be interested to apply for their vacancies. In regional areas, nominations can be submitted. Appointees must complete a JP training course before appointment.

As part of your registration, you will be asked a series of questions to check your eligibility to become a JP. There are three ways to be become nominated as a candidate for justice of the peace : by members of your local party caucus, by the town committee, or by filing as an independent candidate. Outside of a nomination, you can run as a write-in candidate on the general election ballot. Your name will appear on the ballot during the general election. Many people become a JP because they want to perform marriage ceremonies.


The application form requires applicants to provide supporting evidence to their application that ensures they meet the requirements of the Act and Guidelines. Notaries are available at our office to perform this service. Justices of the Peace have a number of duties.
